Japanese Army Officer Style Field Sword Belt

Guaranteed to be an Original 1937-1945 Belt

This belt is a guaranteed original, GREAT condition canvas and leather sword belt.  The belt is clean and super presentable!  The leather is very supple and ALL PARTS ARE PRESENT.  (Most belts have missing loops, or are altered in length, or the two-place accessory band is missing.)  Note that the leather tab under the hanger attachment point is smooth and straight, not curled up like most others!  Like all the other leather in the belt, that leather piece is supple. The only negative is that the buckle lost most of its original finish and has pitting.

If you have been looking at belts in the $150 range with missing parts, dirty canvas, and leather too stiff to work the buckle, here is you chance to get a nice one for a few bucks more.     $225.00

Grade 1 Manchukuo Sword

Actual sword pictured in Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 Cyclopedia Edition on page 363 in Plate 28-6, Plate 28-7, and Plate 28-8.

Grade 1 swords display the crossed flags of Manchukuo in the center of the backstrap and plum blossoms on the backstrap side ears and on the backstrap at the pommel.  This pattern was authorized for enlisted men in the Manchukuo Imperial Army.  This example measures almost 35 inches in the scabbard.  The blade length is a little over 25 inches.  Fakes of this model are all over eBay.  Originals like this one are scarce!  In 20 years of collecting, this is the only Grade 1 Manchukuo sword that I have been able to purchase.

On a scale of fair, good, very good, excellent, and mint, this example is overall Good.  Please look at the photos here and the ones in the book. Brass handle parts have a beautiful patina and the wire is present and tight. The leather grip shows honest wear that reveals the wood in several places. The scabbard latch is present and works but does not quite “catch.”  The blade is just fair with deep pitting on the lower half.  The scabbard retains about 40% of its original finish and has small nicks on the back near the drag as if someone had been sword fighting with the scabbard.  One of two screws is missing from the throat.

Japanese Type 32 Sword for Infantry NCOs

Type 32 Army Sword Otsu with matching numbers (71150) on the blade and scabbard drag and dated Meiji 42 (1909).  On August 3, Meiji 32 (1899), the Type 32 replaced all swords previously authorized for enlisted men.  They were issued in two lengths, the ko (or series A) length for cavalry and the otsu (or series B) length for infantry NCOs.  Although production ceased in 1936, the Type 32 remained a standard sidearm until the end of WWII.  Please see the Chapter 11 titled “Type 32 Army Sword” in Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 Cyclopedia Edition.

Overall condition of the fittings is Very Good plus to Excellent.  The 30 1/2 inch blade is near perfect. The leather finger loop is soft and although it shows wear, it is not broken. The serial number on the scabbard drag is faint, but it is present and guaranteed matching. The blade washer is missing.  The scabbard has two shallow dents near the drag.  Those issues noted, this is a wonderful example!
