About the cover photographs:
The sword pictured on the front cover is a Japanese
Type 19 army company grade kyu-guntÅ that was made to display the 13 x 17 inch (330 x 432 mm) patriotic flags. It most probably was used for ceremonies and parades. The flag is a period Japanese Imperial flag. Additional photographs of the sword and flag appear on page 72.
The swords on the back cover (pictured below) are general grade swords featured
in detail in Chapter 6.
