Type 19 Suya Company Company Grade Kyu-gunto.

Gold plating on the handle is 90%+.  The grip is polished shark skin.  (Most others have white ray skin grips.)  All screws are present.  Near perfect arsenal blade.  Dent free scabbard has 80%+ plating.  Sword locks in the scabbard with a satisfying “click.”  This is a handsome sword that showcases Suya craftsmanship.  Suya Token Shoten, Tokyo, was Japan’s foremost fittings manufacturer.  Suya fitings are of the highest quality.  Difficult to upgrade.

Civilian Katana Outfitted for WWII.

A civilian sword outfitted for war, this sword is featured on pages 208 and 209, Plates 17-3 through 17-8 in the Cyclopedia Edition.  This beautiful sword is excellent to mint!  Overall length in the saya is 38 inches (965 mm); blade length is 25 3/8 inches (645 mm).  The signature is a forgery.  Not much else to add that is not already in the book.  We’ve taken several more photos that you can see by clicking on the link.  Near impossible to upgrade!

Pair of Suya Company Court Style Army Swords

These are the swords featured in Plates 5-3, 5-4 (left sword), 5-6, 5-8, 5-9, and 5-10 in the Cyclopedia Edition.  They are being sold as a pair (will not separate):  They are matching swords from Suya Token Shoten, Tokyo, Japan’s foremost fittings manufacturer.  Suya fittings are of the highest quality. The company grade sword is missing the wire on the grip, and the blade is dark for the most part.  The wire is complete and perfect on the field grade.  Some chrome missing from the blade.  Overall as a pair, condition is very good to excellent.  A company grade model just sold on eBay for over $1000 by itself.  Field grades are scarce.  I have never seen one advertised for sale.

Japanese 1889 Naval Prison Sword
Plate 21-1 web.jpg
Plate 21-3 web.jpg
Actual sword pictured in Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 Cyclopedia Edition on pages 266 and 267 in Plate 21-1, Plate 21-2, Plate 21-3, and Plate 21-4.

On March 18, 1889 (Meiji 22), this pattern was authorized for naval prison guards.  Illustrations in the Naval Uniform Regulations (and reproduced on page 266 of the book) show an anchor on the backstrap at the pommel and on the scabbard tip.

On a scale of fair, good, very good, excellent, and mint, this example is overall Very Good Plus.  Please look at the photos here and the ones in the book. Brass handle parts have a nice patina and the wire is present and tight. The leather grip is excellent! The scabbard latch is present and securely locks the sword in the scabbard.  The blade is excellent with minor discoloration only.  The scabbard retains 80% plus of its original finish and has one dent near the drag on the side opposite the anchor.  Both throat screws are present and original.  This is a very presentable example!

Japanese Type 19 Field Grade
Kyu-gunto Army Sword

Actual sword pictured in Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 Cyclopedia Edition on pages 70, 78, 79, and 80 in Plate 6-28 (second sword from the top), Plate 6-49 (left sword), Plate 6-52 (top sword), and Plate 6-53.  The tassels pictured with the sword in the book are NOT included in this sale.  Field grades swords are scarce and even more so when both hangers, including the lower removable one, are present.

Overall condition is excellent plus!  Ninety percent or more of the gold plating on the handle is still present.  The gold on the guard and knucklebow is a richer yellow than the gold on the backstrap which has a lighter cast.  The horn grip is perfect, the handle is tight, and the wire is present and tight and retains 100% of its gold plating. The chrome plated dress blade retains 98+% of its chrome with minor deterioration near the ricasso. The tip is slightly blunted as I tried to show in a photograph.  The scabbard retains 99% of the original chrome with minute deterioration near the throat and chrome loss at the tip of the drag. This is a stunning example of a rare sword and the best I have ever found!  That is why we featured it in four separate photographs in the book.
